One of the first things I noticed about the US when I got here, wide-eyed, a few years ago, was the sheer size of things – the buckets of cola and popcorn at the movies, the parking lots, SUVs and so forth. I am not not alone:
We are eating the planet, the whole damn thing, right down to the last blade of grass.
From Is it worth eating an American?.
The article also mentions the ecological footprint of various nations. America’s footprint is a massive 10.3 hectares per person, India’s a paltry 0.8. So much is wasted, and so thoughtlessly!
Illuminating article. Fabulously written as well. Amartya Sen’s “Poverty and Famines: An Essay on Entitlement and Deprivation” is a good book to follow up on the subject.
