whorelando

I am so bored that i’m searching for the answers to just about any question that comes to my mind….here’s the next one…

I’ve been wondering how Orlando came to be called just that.

from some etymology dictionary

ORLANDO m Italian
Italian form of ROLAND. A city in Florida (home to the renowned UCF) bears this name, as does a character in Shakespeare’s play ‘As You like It’.

ROLAND m English, French
Pronounced: RO-land
“famous land” from the Germanic elements hrod “fame” and land. Roland was a legendary French hero whose story is told in the epic ‘Chanson de Roland’, where he is a nephew of Charlemagne killed in battle with the Saracens.

I really wonder if someone had this legendary hero in mind when then chose a Knight to be UCF’s mascot. oh well, might as well just be a coincidence…

does anyone know why actually a knight is our mascot? Now thats one question that i couldnt find the answer to.
