Sandhya Vandanam

Hi,
sandhya - vandanam . sandhya means “junction” here it means the coming together of night and day, and that of morning and afternoon, and again the “coming together” of day and night.
vandanam means the process of saluting.

so sandhya vandanam is the process of saluting the twilight and the midday, and so it follwos that it needs to be done thrice daily, at sunrise, midnoon and at sunset.

for some perspective:
sandhya vandanam is supposed to be performed by Brahmins,(the preistly caste, or the caste that is actively involved in learning.) who have undergone Upanayanam.

Upanayanam is the process of declaring a child as fit to undertake vedic education. before upanayanam the child is a Prakrita purusha, or a natural or “wild” man. after being inducted in to Brahmacharya, he is on his way to becoming Brahmachary, or a person who seeks the Brahman(the essence of the universe)

Now, a brahmachari leads a very disciplined life, in tune with nature, following “Dharma”, which can be described as the “right way” to live life.

one of the things a brahmachary needs to do is practise Sandhya Vandanam thrice daily.

The Actual Process :

1.AchamanaM

the process of “bringing your body in tune with the elements” as i call it. the mantras(chants) below refer to various GOds and invoke them to occupy various important body parts.

Take little water on your right palm and swallow it uttering the above mantra(don’t sip the water). Wash the palm with water, wipe the lips with the clean palm, wash the palm again
With right hand fingers as described below touch the various parts of the body.

keshavaaya namaH (thumb to touch right cheek)
naaraayaNaaya namaH (thumb to touch left cheek)
maadhavaaya namaH (ring finger to touch right eye)
govindaaya namaH (ring finger to touch left eye)
vishhNave namaH (index finger to touch right side nose)
madhusuudanaaya namaH (index finger to touch left side nose)
trivikramaaya namaH (little finger to touch right ear)
vaamanaaya namaH (little finger to touch left ear)
shriidharaaya namaH (middle finger to touch right shoulder)
hR^ishhiikeshaaya namaH (middle finger to touch left shoulder)
padmanaabhaaya namaH (four fingers to touch navel and the chest)
daamodaraaya namaH (four fingers to touch head)

2.praaNaayaama

this is the process of controlling the breathing. with the thumb and the ring finger on either nostril, we hold the nostril pressed closed, or leave it open, breathing in and out in accordance to the rhythm of another mantra.

3.saN^kalpaM

With the palms together in the saN^kalpa posture

which is with the right palm facing down on the left palm, at right angles to it.
this part relates to “assuming” or saying what exactly you are going to do (which., of course is sandhya vandanam, that is you are going to do the sandhyavandanam and you are dedicating yourself to this task) Sankalpam is something that is done before doing any religious rite.

Sad Day

Dr.Demara, who (still) holds so much hope in his wide , expressive, thoughtful, cheerful eyes, told me , in the nicest way possible that he wouldnt be able to support me through my PhD. He agreed to be my “academic” advisor, said he could not promise to help me with my research, since he already has many students under his wing, and positively confirmed that he cant find me any funding. Sad.

All of which leaves my future in limbo.

plans for the future:

1)stick around in UCF , hoping to find work as a Teaching Assistant next year too (chances are 50-50, or even a bit on the pessismistic side)

2)hope that the Program Coordinator says i can teach classes by next fall(right now only folks with an MS, or those who have completed some 24 odd credit hours, can actually teach an undergrad class)

3)hope some professor in some university will support me as a research assistant. seems like i will have to go through the painful application process again, and then again, the situation is more or less the same at other univs too (no funds for incoming students)

the reason why i havent started applying already is because i am still trying to find an answer as to whether i should apply for a phd with an emphasis on

a) computer architecture

b) computer science

or

c) cognitive science - now most cog sci programs are offered by psychology departments, so i wonder if they will support an engineer, and also whether it is really good for me. my father / relatives wouldnt like it, since its not “engineering” and so the job prospects post-phd are bleaker. I know that i find reading about things related to the human thought process interesting, but i dont know if its the right thing for me.

i like computers a lot, but i think i wil find something realted to the arts much more satisfying, but i have nothing to back up this feeling that i have.

people who know me, or even those who dont know me, but who have some kind of idea after reading this, please let me know which one would be better for me,*computers or cognition?* I hate to ask this question, but what would YOU do if you had to take up something entirely new at the age of 24, and you dont know if you will ever be any good at it, you just have this feeling that its what you want to do. hell, i dont even have a very good idea about the risks involved in taking this plunge, if i take it!

I’m a normal kid. I slept at 9 pm and woke up at 6 am. I wasnt feeling too good yesternight. my eyes had a problem staying open and focussed, and for the last two days i have had this strange problem. my left eye keep “ticking” if you know what i mean, it twitches, the lower eyelid…
In a major breakthrough, i found out a relation between the systolic binary counter and the systolic stack (no its not that they have the tag “systolic” in common) This could get me a better grade, if the instructor sees my point of view!! The author of the paper had this to say “We suspect that the binary counter and the stack are related, but cant see how exactly.” The relationship i figured out is quite simple, i guess i might be wrong too.

a walk around the globe.

the international student event was fun. we won the “best display” prize . three cheers to sangam, the ucf indian student association !!

i was totally taken in by this chinese female who did a ribbon dance, man she looked angelic, and the music, and her grace, oh God, i dont think i will ever forget that dance. i walked around the stalls, and made friends with a bulgarian, and a syrian, besides a girl from martinique.

i ate –
hungary - creames napolion (a pastry like thing, i LOVED it)\

turkey - baklava (actually a greek food item, its like well, a sweet “puff”)
dolma (grape leaves, and a lot of other things soaked in vinegar and olive oil and wrapped in a leaf, tastes sour, bitter an sweet, and is quite a mouthful, quite tempting, i had 3 of these just trying to make up my mind whether i like them or not, and what the dominant taste was)

Brazil - Shrimp empanada (this is tender shrimp and a lot of other things in some kind of dough, looks like a patty, light brown in color, and kinda gooey to eat)

Russian - Pirozhi (they had a contest at the russian stall, which was like - answer a question and get 50% off on food items, so they asked me for 2 other names for st petersburg and i got 50% off on a pirozhi, which is ground beef inside a wheat crust, the crush is crunchy and the meat is tender and very palatable)

Syrian - hussum (this one looked like haleem, but wasnt quite haleem, it was a thick paste with some spice in it, and they gave me a piece of syrian bread, which was spongy and flat, which i used to scoop the paste up. the combination tastes good, vasu would have loved it.)

the carribean dance was great, man its scary, the way they jerk and twist and turn!

i got an “indian tattoo” (mehendi) done on my right hand, i did it to myself, its just the symbol for scorpio (the one that looks like the alphabet “m”) the indian food was good, i wolfed a lot of samosas!!

a middle aged man from japan walked into the indian stall and surprised me with his knowledge of all things indian. he wants some of the cds i have, hindustani classical and the ms subbalakshmi kinds. hes a professor in the school of optics here. felt so nice, and warm, to talk to him about india, and he was kind enough to take me over to the japanese stall and explain things to me. he’s promised me some copies of japanese paintings.

there was also this middle aged woman, who teaches esperanto. she had been to india in the seventies, seems she was a hippie, drugs and all. she looked very peaceful. so i have seen a former hippie, i have often wondered what happened to the hippies…..i guess they just ungrew their beards and locks and got back to work in the 80s…..

and i was surprised to hear that hindi song “baarana de, baraana de, baraana…” from the brazilians. turns out its a folk tune in brazil ( i mean the song which sounds like the singer is asking for baarah anna, ie, 12 annas). one of the brazilians looked so brazilian that i felt like i was in brazil, he was dark, masculine(like the coconut tree climbers in kerala), had a tattoo, and looked wistful as he sang his song, with a stringed bow in his hand. i WILL talk to him when i meet him next. the africans too looked wild, and their dances are so WILD, i mean they act like they are animals, in most of their dances, and the drums are so different from any i have heard before!!

a day to remember…..

how many indians does it take to build the red fort?

well, the answer is, if you are planning to build the red fort using indians, then you will end up with an orange fort, or better still, no fort….
putting up the indian stall(modelled after the red fort at New Delhi, if you havent guessed by now) for the international students fair at UCF is proving to be fun. I found it amusing that among the charts that were prepared for the display was this one- with hrithik roshan and madhuri dixit on it, the caption reading — “India, a land of ancient traditions and values”. Someone got it all mixed up :) Of course, there was this lady coming and asking us –”oh, but where are the snakes?”.
yeah, like i am a snake charmer, and my friend here uses a cow to move around. :)

I was witness to a glorious sunset today. my room mate got his ear pierced, and i cant think of anything funny to write now. i just wanted to say this, everytime i see the “calvin peeing” sticker on cars, i feel really angry, and sad. calvin is not a mean kid, or maybe he is, but he is not a joke, though he is definitely funny. my right nostril is bleeding, mysteriously. if any of you know where ican find floyd t shirts for less than 11 dollars(thats tshirtriot.com), please do let me know, i shall be grateful. at times i think the internet was originally a plan by USPS to create more revenue, you know, by shipping all the stuff folks by online, but then someone went ahead and invented(or devised) emails, and the plan backfired. like my neighbour, elroy bought a mic-cum-phones for 3 dolalrs, and paid some 12 odd dollars towards postage…understandable since this was his first online purchase…
